WHO THIS IS FOR

This Call Is for People Who Are Serious About This.

Most "should I move abroad" content is written for fantasy-stage curiosity. This call isn't. It's for people who are far enough into the question to need a real conversation.

  • You're Gen X and feeling burned out, boxed in, or stuck

  • You're seriously considering living abroad in the next 6 to 24 months

  • You want honest answers, not influencer optimism

  • You have pets, financial complexity, or family considerations

  • You feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice online

  • You want to avoid costly mistakes and false assumptions

  • You want to think honestly about how race, identity, family complexity, or background affect your move

If most of those describe you, this call will likely be useful.

WHO THIS ISN'T FOR

If You're Looking for One of These, This Isn't It.

We'd rather you not book than have a call that wastes your time and ours. A few honest no's:

  • You're casually curious and not actually planning a move

  • You're hoping we'll tell you whether to do it

  • You want legal, tax, immigration, or medical advice

  • You're looking for a "do it for me" relocation service

  • You want a sales pitch for Ecuador or any specific country

  • You expect us to manage logistics or follow up on your behalf

  • You're in immediate financial or emotional crisis (we're not therapists, and we're not the right first call)

If any of those describe what you actually want, you'll be better served by a different resource. Free guides on our Resources page might help, or a different kind of professional if the question is legal, tax, or therapeutic. We'd rather point you the right way than take your money for the wrong call.

WHAT WE COVER

Every Call Is Customized to You.

We read your intake answers before the call so we don't waste time on intros. The hour goes where your questions are. Common topics include:

The Practical:

  • Real cost of living comparisons, not averages

  • Housing realities and rental expectations

  • Healthcare access and quality

  • Visa realities at a high level (not legal advice)

  • Bringing pets abroad and what people underestimate

  • Banking, taxes, and money basics for expats

The Personal:

  • Emotional adjustment and identity shifts most people don't talk about

  • How race, gender, or family makeup might shape your experience

  • What surprised us most, both good and bad

  • What we'd do differently if we started today

  • Whether your current plan actually makes sense

  • The conversations you might be avoiding

You'll leave with clarity, not more tabs open. We don't promise you'll know what to do - that's your decision.

We promise the conversation will help you decide better.

WHY TALK TO US

We're Not Selling You Anything Else.

We're not relocation agents. We're not selling visas, property, real estate, or country-specific services. We don't have referral deals with relocation companies. We don't get paid if you move.

We're two Gen X professionals who left long careers in the U.S., relocated to Cuenca, Ecuador full-time, and have been documenting what it actually takes — the practical stuff, the financial stuff, the parts that don't make the highlight reel. We started planning in 2022, did our scouting in 2023, and moved in 2025.

Most expat content is written from a single perspective and treats neutrality as the default. We don't. Karen is a white woman; Jonathan is a Black man. The experience of relocating, building community, and being read as a foreigner is different for each of us, and we talk about that openly. If race, identity, or how you'll be perceived in a new country is part of your decision, we won't ask you to set that aside.

Expat is a privilege. Immigrant is the truth. We use both honestly.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

What This Call Is Not.

We don't make decisions for you. We don't tell you what to do. If you're hoping someone will give you permission or absolution, this is the wrong call.

We don't promise outcomes. We don't sugarcoat reality. We won't tell you it's all going to be fine if it might not be, and we won't tell you it's hopeless if it isn't.

We offer perspective, experience, and clarity so you can decide your next step with more confidence than you have right now. That's what you're paying for.

If you've been feeling late to the game, behind, or foolish for considering a different life at this stage, you're not alone. This call exists because we were asking the same questions not long ago.
